The Most Expensive Violin in the World
The Molitor Stradivarius currently holds the record for the most expensive violin to have ever been sold when its price was hammered at USD 3,600,000 during an online auction by Tarisio Auctions last October 14, 2010. The winning bidder was American violinist Anne Akiko Meyers.
This antique violin was crafted by the great Italian maker Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari of Cremona in 1697. Among Stradivari's other masterpieces are the Lady Tennant (sold for USD 2,032,000 in 2005) and The Hammer (sold for 3,544,000 in 2006).
The Molitor Stradivarius also holds the current record of the most expensive musical instrument to have ever been sold in an auction.
